Peter Evans worked as a professional photographer in the UK. He now lives with his artist partner (and your co-host), Jill Fellows, in France. Although having now 'eased down a gear' Peter is still the "photographer on-call" in southwest France for Associated Newspapers, London*. He has been 'behind a camera' since the age of 11.

His photographs have appeared in numerous 'Glossies' worldwide, in catalogues, on advertising posters, in British national and provincial newspapers, in various French publications, and on calendars and postcards. Currently, his photographs of the Lot-et-Garonne are in demand and you will often see his images in tourist publications in France.

Pete (as he prefers to be called) has diverse photographic experience, knowledge and interests. At one end of the scale he has created portfolios for a number of models and beauty queens (including a Miss Wales, Miss United Kingdom, Miss France, Miss Europe and Miss World) whilst, at the other, he has produced a 2 metre wide landscape photographed from a light aircraft using a view-camera and 7"x 5" sheet film.

He has also photographed Prince Charles (as an accredited photographer) and the actress Julie Christie (as a friend). Although experienced in most types of film and darkroom techniques (working in both B&W and colour), Pete has been '100% digital' since 2003. He has also had experience shooting movie film and video.

After making sure that his guests have a good understanding of the basics, Pete also follows the doctrine of 'giving people their head' when it comes to taking photographs. "I cover an extensive list of topics during the week," he says, "but I prefer to give my guidance hands on, while we're actually out working in the field."

Pete firmly believes John Hedgecoe's adage that 'cameras don't make pictures, people do.' As a result, he discourages obsession with equipment and encourages visual awareness. "No-one can really define what makes a good photograph," he says, "what I try to impart is how to avoid making a bad one." Peter Evans is a registered Professional User with Nikon Europe and a member of the Royal Photographic Society

I was unsure what to expect - but I could not have been made more welcome. Pete and Jill open their home to all guests and you are part of the "family" immediately. They have thought about everything and nothing is too much trouble. They know how to teach and what to teach. As a beginner I was taught excellently and patiently. Other painters already experienced continued to learn and develop their skills too.

I enjoyed the time so much I went back later this summer it was so good and such ... view more good value. I hope to go again next year. I recommend it to anyone wanting a painting or photography holiday.

2  Pam Jones / I went back again 2 weeks later
Pete took me from an auto photographer to understanding my camera (Nixon D90) along with Jill making sure all our needs were met. I just had to go back, 2 weeks later to continue the tuition and for more of the superb hospitality.

It was one of the best weeks of my life! From the moment I arrived I felt myself unwind and relax, due the warm welcome, wonderful hospitality and fabulous accommodation/ facilities. The gite is superb, very clean, comfortable and very peaceful, with beautiful grounds and a fabulous little outdoor pool. Pete and Jill showed our group the most stunning scenes and places of interest to paint/photograph every day. I came away having learnt a lot and with some great pieces of art. The two highlights for me were ... view more visiting the Monet water Lilly Nursery and taking a wonderful private boat ride on the river. They took us to some superb restaurants, somewhere new every evening. The food was totally fabulous and all inclusive, so I hardly spent a penny (Euro!).

Everyone in the group couldn't help but laugh lots, relax and have fun, due to Jill and Petes warm, easy-going, caring characters. They work tirelessly hard to ensure their guests have a really special time. We all became friends and had a blast...lots of laughter and plently of putting the world to rights over a few glasses of the best French wine. I would highly recommend this holiday to anyone!

Instruction was well below average. We have taken at least 8 of these kind of courses.
Facilities were below average also. Nice enough people though.

 6  Terry Conner / plus!
We had a wonderful time and the painting and photography courses were both informative and very enjoyable.
Everything we needed was provided and the food and wine was excellent.
It is great value for money and Jill and Pete delivered as promised-plus!

9  Jade tenKate / Painting week in SW France
Thank you for a fantastic week! Great accommodation, great food, wine, sights, villages, markets and, of course, great company! Jill is a patient and sensitive teacher with a very good knowledge of water colour painting and painting in general and can pass that knowledge on in an easy to understand way. If you have enquiries from other Aussies and they would like to speak to another Aussie who has been to stay, please don't hesitate to give them my email address. I would be more than happy to let them ... view more know how fantastic the whole experience has been for me. Thanks again!

Pete is a great teacher; he knows how to make things simple to understand (even in English!). I loved the relaxed atmosphere during the day and in the evenings. Thanks for a great week!
