The Charley River is a National Wild and Scenic River. The National Preserve encompasses 2.5 million acres. This rafting trip offers a Class III white water experience in unspoiled and remote wilderness in the Interior of Alaska. The river cuts through high plateau tundra and valleys untouched by glaciation during the ice age. This is also the home and calving grounds of the Fortymile caribou herd. We have plenty of opportunity to watch wildlife. The area is wilder and less populated than it was 80 years ago during the Klondike gold rush.

Our trip starts after a landing in a small wheel plane on the primitive upper Charley landing strip. There are good hiking opportunities in the upper stretches. After the first three days on the clear and swift Class III Charley River we join the mighty Yukon River where we get to see historic old camps and cabin sites of trappers and prospectors. We also get to see modern subsistence lifestyle with fish camps and fish wheels, fish drying racks along the Yukon River before we reach the small town of Circle. We will have time to enjoy the local culture and experience the way of life in this small bush community before arriving back in Fairbanks.Departure possible from Anchorage as well with two additional days for driving time.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Drive from Fairbanks to the small community of Circle and bush plane to the undeveloped gravel airstrip and the put in at the headwaters of the Charley River

Day 2: We explore and hike the headwaters of the Charley River

Day 3-6: The following days we spend floating down the clear and swift Charley River with spectacular scenery and mountains surrounding us. Wildlife is abundant in the area.

Day 7-9: After reaching the confluence of the Charley River and the mighty Yukon, we will float down the Yukon River to the small community of Circle.

Day 10: Time to enjoy the town of Circle after a hearty breakfast and drive back to Fairbanks.
