In the heart of the Tyrol, the group of Oëtztal reflects the tradition of warm reception of the Austrian mountaineers: each hut has been designed by brilliant decorators, and each hut-keeper will make you taste the tasty and tonic tyrolese meals. In this country of the "art de vivre", the summits will offer you great skiing: nearly two hundred peaks higher than 10,000 feet can be skied in Oëtztal, and our tour will bring you on the top of four of them, of which is Wildspitze (12,369 feet), highest peak of Tyrol and second highest summit of Austria. During our Oëtztal Ski Tour, we will visit the spot where was found "Oëtzti", the Man of the Glaciers, the ancestor of all mountaineers.

A superb tour, with 3 stages with light bagpacks (ascent and descent from the same hut). With fifteen years of experience of Tyrol, in Summer, Winter and Spring, we offer you the best services in the comfortable austrian mountain huts : nights in private bed-rooms, with of 2, 4 or 6 beds, heated in Winter and Spring (no nights in dormitories), one liter of tea for your thermos bottle offered each morning by the hut keeper.Free round-trip shuttle from Geneva Airport for the four first participants registered, contact us for further information.

Your flights: the free round-trip shuttle from Geneva airport will leave the airport very early on Day 1 (at 6.00 am). So, choose a flight landing in Geneva on the evening of the preceding day, and taking off after 8.00 pm on Day 7. If you arrive in Geneva airport on the preceding day of the tour, we propose you a night in a motel close to Geneva airport, for 60 EUR extra charge, with free welcome in Geneva airport, and free transfer to your motel. Access to Vent, starting point of the tour, by direct flights Paris - Innsbrück and Amsterdam - Innsbrück, direct train Innsbrück - Oëtztalbahnhof (40 kms), direct bus Oëtztalbahnhof - Vent (40 kms).

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Meeting Place: Vent, Post-Office, at 01. 00 pm. From this typical Tyrolean village, height 6,220 feet, we follow Niedertaler small valley till Martin Busch hut, a beautiful hut built with granite stones, height 8,205 feet, our first stopping place. From the hut, nice wiew on Similaun peak, to be skied tomorrow. Duration of the stage: 3 hours. Difference of level: 1,980 feet up, 0 feet down.

Day 2: At dawn, easily skiing up the small valley above the hut, we reach Niederjochferner glacier. Built close to the Italian border, on the ridge between the two countries, Similaun hut, 9,904 feet, is reached after two hours of ascent from Martin Busch hut. We will unweight our backpacks there, and then keep ascending up to the Similaun peak, 11,831 feet, superb view point on Tyrolean Alps. We ski down to Similaun hut, a gastronomic place (taste Apfelstrübel or Kaiserschmarren!). Night by the hut. Duration of the stage: 5 hours and a half. Difference of level: 3,626 feet up, 1,927 feet down.

Day 3: This third stage is quite short, allowing us to leave the warm duvets of the hut only by 7 am for breakfast. On the way up to the Hauslabjoch pass, 10,758 feet, we will make a short detour to visit the peat bogs site where was found Oëtzi, the famous mummy. From Hauslabjoch pass, we will ski down more than 3,000 vertical feet till the tiny Rofen Ache bridge, through nice slopes on the North side, a good place to wedeln. A short ascent of 20 minutes will bring us to the beautiful Hochjoch Hospitz, 7,913 feet, where we will spend two nights. Duration of the stage: 3 hours and a half. Difference of level: 1,246 feet up, 3,238 feet down.

Day 4: On this fourth day of ski touring, we are fit, and, with light backpacks we can ascend Weisskugel, 12,267 feet, a long route which will need nearly 5 hours of ascent on Intereisferner glacier, to the HintereisJochpass, 11,388 feet, and to the last slopes of Weisskugel which will be climbed with crampons. Way down to Hochjoch Hospitz by the same route, finishing by a fantastic "schuss" of nearly two kilometers. Night by Hochjoch Hospitz. Duration of the stage: 7 hours. Difference of level: 4,353 feet up, 4,353 feet down.

Day 5: Maybe the most beautiful stage of this tour, with the ascent, in the cool air of dawn, on Kesselwandferner glacier, through huge glacial domes. We will leave our backpacks near the Oben Guslar Joch, to ski up the last snow slope leading to Fluchtkogel, 11,482 feet, nice wiew point on Gepätsch valley. Easy way down on Guslar glacier till Vernagt hut, 9,039 feet. Night by Vernagt hut. Duration of the stage: 6 hours. Difference of level: 3,569 feet up, 2,444 feet down.

Day 6: We will ski today the second highest peak of Austria, Wildspitze, 12,369 feet, with light backpacks. Way up on Klein Vernagt Ferner glacier, till Brochkogel Joch pass, 11,230 feet. From the pass, a flat traverse of nearly one mile will lead us to the final slopes of Wildspitze. The last ridge will be climbed roped with the guide, till the summit's cross. Fantastic wiew on the summits we have soon climbed and skied: Similaun, Weisskugel, Fluchtkogel. We ski back to Vernagt hut, where beer is so tasty! Duration of the stage: 6 hours and a half. Difference of level: 3,330 feet up, 3,330 feet down.

Day 7: We end this tour with the descent to Rofenhofe (6,726 feet), and then to Vent. Separation in Vent by 10:00 am. Duration of the stage: 1 hour and a half. Difference of level : 100 feet up, 2,639 feet down. End of the course by 10 am in Vent. Your mountain guide will do everything possible to make this tour being a success. But, in high altitude, exceptional risks may exist: storms, avalanches. Your guide, responsible for your life, may change the program of this training course for your safety.

Your Level:

Classic tour requiring a very good control of your skis when going down, whatever the quality of snow may be (you can turn with skis parallel in deep powder snow), or when going up (half turns). You like to ski "off-piste", and you have already practiced several ascents in Ski Touring. You practice twice a week either ski touring, running, biking or swimming. During the two months before this tour, you must either run 30 minutes 3 times a week, bike 3 hours 2 times a week, or practice 6 hours of ski touring each week-end.

In the same time, you will practice exercises in a gymnasium to get strong muscles in your legs (quadriceps and calves mainly). Like this, you will be perfectly prepared for both ascents and descents, and you will appreciate the pleasure of ski touring on altitude glaciers. The average speed goes from 1,000 to 1,150 feet of rise per hour, with a difference of level climbed each day rising from 1,246 to 4,353 feet.
