There are few places in North America where both diurnal and nocturnal raptors concentrate in large numbers during the winter. One such area is the Mission Valley of western Montana. This beautiful intermountain valley that is home to one of the largest concentrations of wintering birds of prey in western North America. Birds we expect to find will include nineteen species of raptors including: Golden Eagle, Bald Eagle, Gyrfalcon, Peregrine Falcon, Prairie Falcon, Merlin, American Kestrel, Northern Goshawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Rough-legged Hawk, Northern Harrier, Long- and Short-eared Owl, and lesser chances of finding Great Gray Owl and Barred Owl. Depending on the winter and winter severity, another six species of owls are possibilities which including Snowy Owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl, and Boreal Owl.

The sheer numbers of raptors we will encounter will astound you. The Mission Valley is home to one of the highest concentrations of wintering Long-eared Owls and Short-eared Owls in North America and one of the largest global communal roosting sites for wintering Rough-legged Hawks in existence. Naturally, we will seek out other birds in our travels such as Trumpeter Swan, Barrow’s Goldeneye, Gray Partridge, Northern Shrike, Bohemian Waxwings, and Gray-crowned Rosy Finches to name few. More common and widespread species we may encounter include Ring-necked Pheasant, Black-billed Magpie, Three-toed and Black-backed Woodpeckers, Common Raven, Townsend’s Solitaire, and American Tree-sparrow. This tour will require mild to moderate walking. There will be some excursions off the road each day (ranging from one to three miles) on relatively level and somewhat rolling terrain. Since this is a winter tour, prepare for cold conditions and dress accordingly.
