Day 1: Upon arrival at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City, you will be met and transferred to Gamboa Rainforest Resort, where you will spend the next three days. Night at Gamboa Rainforest Resort.
Day 2: This morning you will take a Jungle Boat Expedition. Aboard the Endemic, a specially equipped expedition boat, you will visit Dariencito, once a US military compound, now being taken over by lush, tropical rainforest, home to trogons, toucans and howler monkeys. You will continue your voyage across the Panama Canal passing by gigantic cargo ships, as you watch for Green iguanas resting on tree branches, Ospreys hunting for Peacock Bass and with luck the recently released Harpy Eagle that makes the Panama Canal Watershed its territory. You will also visit the Primate Reserve and Sanctuary of Panama, located on islands in Gatun Lake, where you will see capuchins, tamarins, howler and spider monkeys. In the afternoon you will return to the Gamboa Resort using your free time to explore their extensive rainforest and riverine habitats on your own or to enjoy one of the many optional activities offered by the resort. Day 3: Today will be spent in Soberania National Park, along the famous Pipeline Road. This forest is considered one of the most accessible tropical forests in the world, with close to 400 species having been recorded; it has been the site of world record Christmas Bird Counts. You will look for Great Curassow, Barred Forest Falcon, Rufous Motmots, Purple-throated Fruitcrow, Black-tailed Trogon, Rufous-crested Coquette and for mammals such as howler monkeys, sloth, and lesser anteater. In the afternoon you will visit Summit Gardens for some birding and to see the new Harpy Eagle exhibit. In addition, you will have a tour of Casco Viejo and visit Miraflores Locks and its exhibits. You will return to your hotel in the late afternoon. Night at Gamboa Rainforest Resort. Includes: (B), (PL).
Day 4-5: Today you will fly to Bocas del Toro, only recently discovered by international travelers, keeping much of this Caribbean island chain in pristine and untouched splendor. During your stay you will explore Bastimentos Marine National Park, where you will be able to snorkel along both coral reefs and mangrove islands. And one morning will take you to Swan's Cay, the home of Red-billed Tropicbirds, Brown Boobies and Magnificent Frigatebirds. Nights at Bocas Inn. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 6: Following a morning tour at Bocas del Toro, you will fly back to Panama City. Upon arival you will be transferred to Canopy Tower. Night at Canopy Tower. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 7-8: You will begin your days observing birds from the Canopy Tower, one of the best vantage points for bird observation in Central Panama. The Tower, a former radar station which has been beautifully converted into a nature lodge, is located on Semaphore Hill, at an altitude of 900 feet above sea level. From its observation roof you are at eye-level with the forest canopy. From here you can observe such specialties as Blue Cotinga and Green Shrike -Vireo, along with large flocks of Keel-billed and Chestnut-mandibled Toucans, Red-lored Parrots, and numerous other canopy treasures. You will also hike down Semaphore Hill through one of the most scenic lowland rainforests in the Americas, looking for antbirds such as White-flanked Antwren, along with other rainforest species such as Great Jacamar, Blue-crowned Manakin and Black-breasted Puffbird. You will be shuttled back to the Tower to avoid the steep climb back up Semaphore Hill. Nights at Canopy Tower Lodge. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 9: You will be transferred to the airport for your flight home. Includes: (B).
