From here a forest track requiring a 4WD vehicle leads to Lemosho Glades (2100 m) about eleven kilometers for forty-five minutes and walk along the forest trails for three hours to Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite, (2750 m).

Day 2: Today the trail gradually steepened and enters the giant heather moorland zone. Several streams are crossed then it gains the Shira Ridge at about 3600 m and drops gently down for about five hours to Shira 1 camp located by a stream on the Shira Plateau (3500 m).

Day 3: After breakfast a slight walk across the plateau that leads to Shira. Two camp after about one and half hour on moorland meadows by a stream (3850 m). A variety of walks are available on the Plateau making this an excellent acclimatization day.

Day 4: Early in the morning, the moorlands soon come to an end and the rocky path leads amongst outcrops for four hours to the Lava Tower where there are good campsites (4600 m).

Day 5: After breakfast from the Lava Tower camp steep scree and rocky outcrops requiring scrambling lead up the Western Breach to the crater floor. After snow falls the route can become icy and in these conditions an ice axe or ski stick may be required. It is possible to camp almost anywhere in the crater or in a further 2 hours Uhuru Point can be reached by a variety of routes. Mweka Hut may be reached in a further 6 hours from the summit allowing a short lunch stop and rest at Barafu, NB from the Lava Tower Hut to Mweka via Uhuru will take at least 14 hours.

Day 6: Descend to the Mweka Park Gate, for about four hours approximately and drive to the hotel.
