Day 1: Lijiang(2400)-Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge(1900)- Haba Village (2600m)

From Lijiang, you'll drive about 60km to the First Bend on the Yangtze River with imposing gorge scenery, and the Iron Chain Bridge in the Stone Drum town. The town of Stone Drum got its name from a large, cylindrical, marble tablet shaped like a drum. The scenery is magnificent as the road running through the Lijiang valley which is filled with wheat fields and drying haystacks. Continue the driving 40km more to visit the the upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world. With 34 rapids of the Yangtze River, it is called the Jinsha in this area because you can find gold in the river.

Then, you'll head for the middle part of Tiger Leaping Gorge for your lunch. After a short trekking in Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge, drive to Haba Village which is a small Naxi village located at the food of Haba Snow Mountain. Arrive at Haba Snow Mountain Guesthouse in Haba Village. You will prepare for your equipment and acclimatize youselfself to the altitude(2600M in Haba Snow Mountain Guesthouse.) After lunch, examine your heart rate and blood oxygen content. Learn the knowledge, condition and introduction of the Haba Snow Mountain Climbing. Overnight at Haba Snow Mountain Guesthouse. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 2: Haba Village (2600m)-the Base Camp at the 4200 m of Haba Mountain

Trek up the Haba Mountain for about 15 km to the Base Camp at the 4200 m, which will take about 7 hours, with yaks taking your luggage. You will have picnic lunch in Haba Snow Mountain. You only need to take some water, clothe, necessary food, the other equipment will be transfered by the horses to the Basic Camp. Base camp altitude indications vary depending on whom you ask but we found it to be at about 4100 m so this is a rather long day and the path can get very muddy. Use good waterproof boots. The walk will take 4-6 hours and is mostly through the beautiful Yunann forest apart from three meadows that you will cross on the way.

Today you will hike up 1500M of the altitude, arrive at the Base Camp in the afternoon. Because of the high elevation, everyone will suffer the different altitude sickness. You should know how to adjust the situation and adapt to the high elevation. If you really feel not very well, please tell your escort. Note: It is not allowed to sleep before 9:00 PM. Overnight at the Base Camp or in the wooden hut(beds and quilt are availible in the wooden hut). Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 4: One day Acclimatization in the Base Camp 4200M

You will spend the day to acclimatize in the base camp. Some Chinese climbers and web sites are recommending a Camp 1 at 4900 m just before getting on the glacier (a small pond/lake is located there) but it seems most people do the climb in one day up and down from base camp. This seems to be the best solution especially if you can spend one day to acclimatize in base camp. There is a nice 4 h walk going to black lake and back from base camp if you chose this option.

The base camp is located at the edge of the forest so ample wood supply is available and a very clean river stream flows nearby. Two hut guardian are now staying at base camp and can provide basic cooking and even some drinks (coke etc.). Camping at base camp is confortable and free in a very nice setting plus you can take advantage of some of the hut facilities. In rainy weather however, the ground becomes very wet and it is difficult to keep the tents dry.

A new hut has recently been added to the 'historical one' these huts are still pretty basic with sod floor and open walls on the outside but the largest and most recent one can offer shelter to about 30 people while the oldest one is much smaller (8 max). Sleeping in the hut is on wooden plank and acceptable although it seems most people still prefer the camping solution. Overnight at the Base Camp or in the wooden hut (beds and quilt are available in the wooden hut). Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 4: Base Camp at the 4200 m-the Camp 1 at 4800 of Haba Snow Mountain

Members only take the simple food, water, clothe, headlight, climbing equipment, you will try to minimize the load, other equipment will be transfered by our staff. Today you will climb up about 6 km to the Camp 1 at 4800m, which will take about 6 hours climbing. Arrive at the Camp 1 at noon and have your lunch. After lunch, you will do some mountain climbing trainning such as the technical training, mountain walking skills, rope walking skills, the skills of the walking on snow slope and rest, the skills of sliding and falling.

Our professional mountaineering guide will choose the right path for you to climb up. But you have to take your own luggage by yourself. You will have picnic lunch. Our guide will set up the Camp 1 for you. After dinner, you will try to keep your physical strength, energy. Note: Do not sleep before 7:00 at night. Camp1 is located just before the 2nd grey slab at about 4900 m. Usually people did not stay there but from what you could observe it seems quite unconfortable due to the very rocky and uneven surface. A small pond nearby provides water. Overnight at Camp 1 at 4800M. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 5: Camp 1 (4800 m)-top of Haba Snow Mountain (5396m)-Base Camp (4200M)

You will try to climb to the top of the Haba Snow Mountain at the 5396m, which will take about 5 hours, you will climb about 4 km. It is the ice and snow trail from the camp 1 to the summit, the altitude up 500M, usually, it will take you about 3 hours to the top. More suggestions about the Haba Snow Mountain Climbing:

The Haba Snow Mountain climb is not difficult but requires use of crampons for the last 500 m climb on the glacier. The glacier has only few crevasses and the slope does not exceed 40 degrees but a rope is still recommended for the upper part. The only section that requires some precaution is the ridge between the two summits especially by foggy weather as there can be some cornices and the drop on the other side is vertical. As Haba Snow Mountain is one of the first relatively high mountains in China coming from the south it is quite exposed to very high winds and one accident already happened on the summit ridge for that reason.

The ascent from base camp to summit will take 5 to 7 hours. People typically leave Base camp around 3-4 am. It is recommended to recognize the area on the previous day.You can find a small path between the two huts at the base camp (to the left of yellow lake)that goes down around a small water pond and then crosses the river about 100 m further (5' from base camp). Go up on moraine debris on the way to the large grey slab that has been left by the latest glacier retreat. After 45-60 mn you will reach this huge grey slab very visible from the base camp.

Go up directly on the grey slab, from the base camp this slab looks a lot steeper than is actually is and the rock has excellent adherence even when wet. Appoximately 60-90 mn later you will reach a plateau before more morainic debris on which a path becomes again visible. It seems the glacier has retreated in multiple steps leaving several zones of moraine. Follow the path up the 2nd moraine and you will reach another grey slab just before the glacier where you can put the crampons on. Note the place for camp 1 if you want to use one is situated just before this second grey slab near a small pond (water available) 60-90 mn.

On the glacier climb directly the slope directly above the 2nd grey slab until you reach the area just below the lower summit of Haba Shan. You will then follow the ridge (watch out for wind and cornices) that is presenting a characteristic and beautiful curve in this area to the main summit that can be reached about 30 mn 60 mn later. Total 5-7 hours. The descent uses the same itinerary (2-3 hours). It is possible to go down the same day to Haba Cen but most people spend one additional night at base camp and go down on the following day.
