Our Selous and Zanzibar holiday includes time at two of Tanzania’s World Heritage Sites, during this exciting holiday you’ll fly on light aircraft between locations. Stay in Serena's stunning new boutique eco-lodge, Mivumo River Lodge, located on the banks of the Rufiji River; at the stunning seafront hotel, the Zanzibar Serena Inn in Stone Town and the beachfront Matemwe Lodge. This version of our Specialist Tanzania Selous Safari and Zanzibar holiday is based on opulent lodge accommodation and is ideal for couples and honeymooners.

If you’d prefer more or less time in either the Selous or Zanzibar, or have alternative accommodation in mind, contact us for a tailored quote. Our Selous and Zanzibar holiday departs daily throughout the year except during the long rains of April and May when lodges in the Selous close. Operating on a private departure basis with a minimum of 2 people you can enjoy an exclusive Selous Safari and Zanzibar holiday experience.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive Dar es Salaam; short flight into Selous Game Reserve. Your safari starts with an exciting short flight aboard a light aircraft into the north-eastern part of Selous Game Reserve. You’ll get a bird’s eye view of the lush wilderness and wetlands of the Rufiji River before landing in Africa’s largest Game Reserve. You will be greeted by staff from the lodge, and transferred by vehicle (approx. 30 minutes) to the Mivumo River Lodge, set in an exclusive location on the north bank of the river near Steigler's Gorge. Here you’ll spend your nights in superior river-facing suites equipped with an indoor bathroom, outdoor shower and an intimate plunge pool. In the afternoon head out on your first game viewing activity – either a leisurely boat safari along the mighty Rufiji River or a game drive, depending on your preference. Accommodation: Mivumo River Lodge. Includes: (L, D).

Days 2-4: Choice of game viewing activities in the Selous. During your next three days in the Selous you’ll enjoy a variety of game viewing experiences with a choice of boat, foot or vehicle-based activities available. You can arrange your final schedule with camp staff but a typical day includes a morning game viewing activity followed by lunch back at camp (and a siesta!), then a late afternoon activity, sundowner and dinner. Nature walks and fishing trips are also possible from the lodge.

On each activity you’ll be accompanied by a highly experienced game ranger/guide. Game drives are extremely popular and typically last for a half day, however full day safaris can be arranged locally and will take you deeper into the Reserve. From the Sand River and Selous' Grave to Lake Tagalala and hot volcanic springs, the destinations within the Selous are quite varied. Final game drive routes and timings depend on the wildlife encountered and the specific interests of guests. Accommodation: Mivumo River Lodge. Includes: (B, L, D).

Day 5: Fly to Zanzibar Island; transfer to Stone Town. Arriving at Zanzibar airport after an hour's flight from the Selous you’ll be met and transferred to the Zanzibar Serena Inn, a stunning property that is set in two historic seafront buildings that have been restored into a single property echoing the grandeur of the 18th and 19th century. Known locally as Mji Mkongwe, Stone Town is the cultural and historical centre of Zanzibar. Consisting of narrow alleyways, ancient houses, shops, museums and mosques the town is an eclectic fusion of African, Indian, Arabian and European influences.

Gazetted as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Stone Town is rich in history, atmosphere, architecture and Arab tradition. One of the popular ways to find your bearings and get to grips with the backstreets and attractions of Stone Town is on an optional walking tour with an experienced guide. In the evening, the Serena's poolside veranda is a perfect spot to watch the sun setting over the Indian Ocean. Accommodation: Zanzibar Serena Inn.

Days 6-7: At leisure in Stone Town; optional Spice Tour and dhow safari. Stone Town is a fascinating place to spend a day soaking up more local attractions and watching daily life unfold. This morning you could head to the waterfront to see the dhow harbour and experience the fish market, or make a visit to the Victoria Hall and Gardens – once the place of residence for Sultan Said Baraghash’s harem. You also have time today to enjoy an optional half day ‘Spice Tour’ of the island. Spices have been at the very heart of Zanzibari commerce since the abolition of the slave trade.

The huge variety of different spices highlights Zanzibar’s important strategic location as well as the depth of cultural interaction. Another popular option is a boat ride to the infamous Prison Island - now a retreat for a hideaway lodge and the home of some very old residents - giant tortoises. Serena also own the Mangapwani Beach Club and Restaurant, and a trip there by dhow with lunch is a great way to spend a day. A dhow trip to the Menai Bay Conservation Area may also be of interest for those keen to spot dolphins and take lunch on a deserted island. Accommodation: Zanzibar Serena Inn. Includes: (B).

Day 8: Transfer to Matemwe. An hours drive will take you to Matemwe on the north-east coast. Boasting the most idyllic beaches, and with the adjacent Mnemba Atoll offering spectacular diving and snorkelling, Matemwe is a real paradise. Matemwe’s exclusive location, away from the big hotels, gives the beach a very private feel with fleets of fishermen in traditional wooden dhows a more common site than hordes of sun-worshippers. Matemwe is an intimate lodge with just twelve luxury suites perched on a coral rock, surrounded by glorious beaches. The friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere and excellent cuisine are renowned on the island. Accommodation: Matemwe. Includes: (B, L, D).

Days 9-11: At leisure at Matemwe; optional dhow trip, snorkeling or diving. Depending on your personal interests there are a range of activities and excursions available at Matemwe. Although Matemwe does not have its own diving school it does work with a reliable dive operator that can collect Matemwe’s guests every day. Diving and snorkeling conditions are excellent in the Marine Park around the nearby Mnemba Atoll.

Snorkeling can be done from the beach or on a trip with Matemwe’s own wooden dhow boats. Guided reef and village walks, dhow boat trips, kayaking and cycling are also available. Alternatively just spend some lazy days lounging by the pool, on the beach or in a hammock. Accommodation: Matemwe. Includes: (B, L, D).

Day 12: Fly to Dar es Salaam where holiday ends. Your Specialist Tanzania holiday ends today after check-out from your accommodation and a short flight to Dar es Salaam airport. Includes: (B).
