Humahuaca, located in the northernmost province of Jujuy, is a popular stopover for those traveling in the north of Argentina and on to Bolivia. The town is nestled amongst spectacular mountain ranges and sits at roughly 3,000 meters above sea level (the side effects of traveling to places at altitude certainly need to be considered in this region of Argentina).

The town itself is extremely picturesque and tranquil with cobble-stoned streets, bright adobe houses and some historical buildings/statues of significance situated around the main plaza. The night-life isn’t extensive, but what it lacks in quantity is made up for in quality, with the warmth of the locals and the regional dishes on offer in the town’s restaurants. There are several peñas which allow you to enjoy your dinner while listening to the enchanting rhythms of the region’s folk music en vivo (or live).

The town is fairly well-developed in terms of services and accommodation for tourists and hosts a number of well-run hostels. As well as the town itself, another draw for many visitors is the surrounding mountainous, desert-like wilderness. The town is an excellent place from which to explore the Quebrada de Humahuaca with its many hiking opportunities. Be sure to obtain reliable advice on suitable routes or go on excursions with professional guides, as this is hostile and isolated terrain.

The towns of Tilcara, Purmamarca and Iruya, especially popular amongst backpackers, are also easily reached from Humahuaca which has a relatively busy bus terminal. Be sure to pack for all eventualities weather-wise as the climate in this part of the world is extremely diverse – usually extremely hot during the day (although comfortable in the winter months) and cold during the night.

Airfare is not included in the tour price.
