Tour Itinerary:

Day 1 Airport – Yerevan – Sightseeing tour

Yerevan – City tour. Early Arrival in Yerevan. Transfer to hotel, rest. City tour: Republic Square: Centerpiece of architect Alexander Tamanyan’s 1920s master plan for Yerevan. Victory Park: Museum of Armenian History, Cascade: Contemporary Art Museum: «Cafesjian Center for the Arts», Visit to the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, named after Mashtots - Matenadaran. The museum is a repository of ancient manuscripts.
Transfer to the hotel. Free time.

Day 2. Yerevan – Sevan – Artanish – Sevan

A trip to the “pearl of Armenia” – highland Lake Sevan. The Sevan basin is one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world, as well as a unique nature reserve with its own microclimate and magnificent landscapes.

Excursion about the Sevan peninsula and Sevanavank monastery, which consists of St.Arakeloz church (the Church of Holy Apostles, IХ c AD) and St.Astvatsatsin church (the Church of the Mother of God, IX c AD).

A trip along the shore of Lake Sevan to the village Shorzha.
Hiking on Artanish mountain (2480), situated on the Sevan shore (ascent – 2.5 hours, descend – 2 hours). A wonderful view over the lake is revealed from the top of the mountain.

Day 3 Sevan – Garni – Geghard – Azhdahak Mountain

Excursion to the Armenian Kings' summer residence – Garni fortress (III-XIII cc BC) and the pagan Temple of the Sun (I c), built by King Trdat in 77 AD, it is the only Hellenistic type temple preserved in the territory of CIS countries. A trip to Geghardavank monastery. Tour around the unique cave monastery (carved into the rock) of Geghard (XII-XIII cc AD), some rooms of which have unsurpassed acoustics.

The name Geghardavank means “the Monastery of the Spear.” It is connected with the spear (once kept here) which, according to legend, was used by a Roman legionary to pierce Christ on the cross. The diamond-shaped spearhead is now kept in the museum of St. Echmiatsin Cathedral.

A trip to Geghard village; then ascent to Lake Vanki in an all-terrain vehicle (UAZ). After setting up camp – a view of ancient rock carvings (petroglyphs), on basalt boulders at the foot of Ajdahak Mountain.

Day 4 Climbing Azhdahak. Wake up at 7:00. Start hiking the extinct volcano Ajdahak (3597 m). For physically prepared travelers it takes 3-4 hours.

In the crater of the mountain, tourists can admire the emerald green glacial lake. The top of the mountain is a vista point for a beautiful view of Lake Sevan, the Geghama mountain range and its alpine landscape.
Lunch at the top. Descent (3 hours) to the northern lake of the mountain, Lake Akna (3023m).

Set up camp at splendid mountain Lake Akna. Tourists travel light; the bivouac equipment will be taken to the top of the Ajdahak plateau by truck.

Day 5 Ajdahak mountain – Descent – Transfer to the foot of Mount Aragats

Descent from Lake Akna in UAZ 4-wheel vehicle, transfer to the foot of Aragats – to the fortress of Amberd. A tour around Amberd fortress (a fortress in the clouds, VII-XIVcc AD), which is situated at an altitude of 2300m on a triangular promontory formed by the small rivers Amberd and Arkashen. Here opens a wonderful view of Mount Ararat and the Ararat valley. Walk about the fortress (length of route: 1.5km, approx. time: 40 minutes). Ascend to 3200 m to the highland Lake Kari. Set up camp. Stroll around the surroundings.

Day 6 Climbing the Southern and Northern peaks of Mount Aragats. Climb the southern peak (3887 m) of extinct volcano Aragats. Descend to the crater (3683 m), through the saddle of the southern and the western peaks. Climb to the highest (northern) peak (4090 m). Return to camp.

Day 7. Aragats – Khor Virap – Noravank – Eghegnadzor

A trip through Ararat valley. A visit to Khor Virap (Deep Dungeon) monastery. The first official head of the Armenian Apostolic church, St. Gregory the Illuminator, languished as a prisoner in the dungeon of the monastery for 13 years. The monastery is located a few hundred meters from the border of Armenia and Turkey, on the banks of the River Arax, and at the foot of biblical Mount Ararat (5165m). From the monastery walls a panoramic view on the majestic mountain is revealed.

The route of the tour then passes through the Vayotsdzor Marz, along the picturesque gorge of the River Gnishik, to the monastery of Noravank (New Monastery, XII-XV cc AD). Noravank was the spiritual center of the Orbelian Dynasty, where prominent figures of Armenian medieval culture lived and worked. A walk along the beautiful gorge of the Gnishik River (2 km, 1.5 hours). A walk around the city of Jermuk, viewing the waterfall.

Day 8. Egheghnadzor – Vayotssar- Kechut– Hot springs

Continue to extinguished volcano Vayotssar (last erupted in 10 c. A.D. A picturesque (fish eye shaped crater) A trip to Kechut reservoir, then hiking along the gorge of the Arpa River to the medieval monastery Gndevank (X c AD) and then to the village of Gndevaz.

A trip along the hot springs (active geyser). A drive along the mountain roads for approximately 40-50 minutes, and then a picnic. While tourists are bathing in thermal springs, accompanying personnel will prepare khorovats (a Shish-kebab of fresh pork) on request of the group and set a table. Rest in nature’s lap. Return to Jermuk.

Day 9. Jermuk – Ukhtasar – Tatev

A trip in all-terrain vehicles from Sisian to one of the most interesting and attractive mountains – Mount Ukhtasar (3300 m) which, besides being a wonderful panorama with a small lake, is also famous for its ancient petroglyphs (4-7 millennium).

Descend from the mountain. Transfer to the ropeway. Ascend to Tatev monastery (IX-XVII cc AD) by the longest ropeway in the world. Excursion around the monastery, which was the cultural and spiritual center of medieval Armenia, and famous for its university (XIV-XV cc AD). The monastery inspired a national liberation struggle of Syunik Armenians against Iranian and Ottoman invaders.

Day 10. Tatev – Climb of Khustup – Kapan. Transfer through the city of Kapan to the foot of Khustup Mountain. Ascend Mount Khustup (3212 m) by truck (10 km, 1hour) and by foot (5 km, 3.5 hours). Lunch at the top. Descent – 1.5 hours by auto to Kapan. Dinner and overnight in a hotel.

Day 11 Kapan – Goris – Khndzoresk – Karahunge – Yerevan. A trip to Khndzoresk village for a tour of the cave settlement “Old Khndzoresk.” From the observation point, descend/ascend on foot into the caves (1.5-2 hours). A visit to ancient stone observatory Zorats Karer (Karahunge, IV millennium BC) in Sisian (1578 m). View the first forms of monumental architecture in human history. A walk (2 km, 1.5 hours)

Return to Yerevan.

Day 12 Yerevan – Vernissage – Tashir – Zvartnots airport. Visit the “Vernissage,” a fair of handicraft goods, where unusual handmade souvenirs of silver, wood and semiprecious stones; as well as ceramics, carpets and paintings can be purchased. A visit to the food market, “Tashir,” where guests can buy fresh fruit, dried fruit, Armenian sweets, condiments and spices. Transfer to Zvartnots airport. Departure from Yerevan.
