After La Llovizna, travel to Cachamay, a park of similar characteristic as La Llovizna where we will stop for lunch.

Day 4: Caripe - Maturín. Today we head to the Guacharo Cave located on the northern side of the Monagas State (3hr drive) . The cave is the biggest and one of the most famous caves in Venezuela. This cave has as its centerpiece a large limestone cave, which is home to thousands of oilbirds (guácharos in Spanish; scientific name Steatornis caripensis). The cave is a limestone cavern over 10 km long, with a number of large chambers and spectacular rock formations.

Its most unique feature is the huge number of birds who live inside, which the Indians have named “Guacharos”. Like bats, these birds possess an ultrasonic orientation system, are the only vegetarian night-birds on earth and are found only in this cave. The cave was explored 200 years ago by Humboldt. Later, Alfred Hitchcock sent a team to Venezuela to capture the sounds of the cave for his famous movie “The Birds”.

After visiting the cave, we will have lunch at a typical Venezuela restaurant where you will also have an opportunity to visit little shops that sell local handicraft. At this place you will also be able to walk to El Salto la Paila (a 70 m. waterfall). At around 6:00 PM, return to the cave to see how hundred of birds exit the cave from its interior going in search for food. The birds are expected to return right before sunrise.
