Tretyakov Gallery is definitely on the list of the “top 10” things to see and do in Moscow. Started by Russian merchant and patron of arts Paul Tretyakov in 1853, it is a collection of purely Russian arts, unique in the scale of the whole huge country. The tour focuses on the XIX-century Russian arts: back then, in the era dominated by the abolition of serfdom in 1861, Russian painting started to blossom: away from the long-lasting tradition of creating icons and portraits, characteristic of the XVII and XVIII centuries, Russians, step by step, unveiled the earlier unnoticed by the artist’s eye, profound layers of native culture – Russian nature, folk stories & fairy tales, historical themes, literary achievements, life of the newly joint provinces of the Empire, new perspective on portraying God…Before his death Paul Tretyakov bestowed his peculiar collection to the city of Moscow but put 2 conditions: the collection couldn’t be added to or modified…and the entrance to the Gallery should have been kept free for everyone forever. Come and find out if any of Tretyakov’s testaments have been realized.
