The Mikumi National Park is located in Morogoro region, in the southern Tourist circuit of Tanzania, it is about 288km, west of commercial city of Dar es salaam. At a normal driving speed, it takes about four hours to get there.
The road is bitumenised all the way through to the park. The park which was gazette in 1964 gets its name from settlement of mikumi, which in turn, gets its name from the spindle – shaped borassus palm trees, which are typical of the area.

The Mikumi National Park has an area of 3,230sq. km and is the fourth largest park after the Serengeti, Ruaha and Katavi National Parks, in that descending order.
It lies between the villages of doma and mikumi on the dare s salaam – Tunduma highway. Admittedly, Mikumi National Park “ falls into a gap in the “ eastern Arc mountains”.

Itinerary:
Days 1-3: Today you fly from Dar-es-Salaam to Ruaha National Park, where you spend the next three nights. Ruaha National Park has recently been combined with the Usanga Game Reserve making the largest National Park in Africa covering over 15,000 sq km. This new park itself is at the heart of a much larger ecosystem covering over 40,000 sq km. The lodge is set on the mighty Great Ruaha River and has probably the best location of all lodges in the park. The scenery is stunning, the rapids over which the lodge looks always have game drinking and the nearby pools are filled with crocodiles and hippos.

Day 4: Today you travel through the highlands of Tanzania to Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Udzungwa contains the greatest altitudinal range of forests in East Africa. Because of such a wide range in altitude and habitat types, Udzungwa National Park has one of the highest numbers of species endemism worldwide. With no roads entering Udzungwa NationalPark it is a paradise for hikers and your next days will be spent on breath-taking day-hikes into the dense rain forest or onto the high plateau.

Days 5-6: You spend your next two days in Mikumi National Park. Mikumi National Park is composed primarily of the Mkata River flood plain, this is surrounded by gently rolling hills covered in miombo woodland.
Although less spectacular than some of the more illustrious Tanzanian National Parks, Mikumi still offers a good safari experience with typical flora and fauna of East Africa. There is a rich variety of bird species as well as large numbers of giraffes, buffaloes and elephants and close to the waterholes lions, leopards and hippos. Furthermore you can see zebras, wild dogs, pythons, hartebeest, wildebeest, elephants, impala, warthog, eland and other antelope. Several observation towers enable you to view the park in its entirety.

Days 7-10: Today you fly from Mikumi National Park to a private airstrip on the coast. From here it is a 20 minute boat ride to Lazy Lagoon. A private island with a great beach and good facilities.

Day 11: Today you fly back to Dar-es-Salaam.
