Mountain gorilla tracking is a strenuous activity that requires a certain level of physical fitness if you are to take it on record as a remarkable experience. Mountain Gorillas are shy, social animals and very active during the day. They live in families of 8-25 members with one leading male (The Silver Back), accompanied by several females with their young. Gorillas have high social qualities and relationships within the family. They express their feelings, varying from loving and hating to shame and jealousy, by at least 20 distinct vocalisations, each with a different meaning, besides beating on the chests or on the ground which is their most common form of communication.

Day 1: Arrival for and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park.
On arrival at the airport, you will be received by your guide then transfer to the the home of the the endangered great apes. Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) is located in the north-west Rwanda, on the joint border with Uganda and DR Congo, where it is contiguous with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda) and Virunga National Park (Democratic Republic of the Congo). The park is best known for Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla beringei) and popular for being the base for the American naturalist Dian Fossey to carry out her research into the Mountain Gorillas. She arrived in 1967 and set up the Karisoke Research Centre between Karisimbi and Visoke. From then on she spent most of her time in the park, and is widely credited with saving the Mountain Gorillas from extinction by bringing their plight to the attention of the international community. She was murdered by unknown assailants at her home in 1985, a crime often attributed to the poachers she had spent her life fighting against. Fossey's life later was portrayed on the big screen in the famous film “Gorillas in the Mist”, named after her autobiography. She is buried in the park in a grave close to the research center, and amongst the gorillas which became her life. Overnight at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge/Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge.
