Mount Kenya can be hiked all year round but January – February and August – October are more recommended months. These periods have the best weather of less and no rains.
This hiking tour takes you up to point Lenana (4985 m), the third highest peak. It is here that hikers have excellent view of the surrounding countryside. Lenena is the most popular point of reach for most Mount Kenya’s mountaineer’s because there are no serious altitude issues.
Hiking to Bation and Nelion, which are the highest peaks is organized on request. These points are only recommended for professional mountaineers.
Day 1: Arrival for Mount Kenya Mountaineering Tour.
Arrive in Kenya, you will meet your guide then transfer to the hotel. Depending on the time of arrival, you visit Nairobi National Park or the National Museum of Kenya.
Nairobi National Park established in 1746, is today Kenya’s oldest Game Park. Lying only 7 km away from Nairobi capital city, the park surprisingly still has varied habitats which include open, rolling grass plains, riverine woodland, valley thicket and bush, artificial dams and ponds, rocky gorges and upland dry forest. The park is fenced along three sides, where it is adjacent to urban housing, industry, roads and airports; only the southern border, along the Embakasi and Athi rivers, is open for animal dispersal. The park has healthy populations of big game among which include Zebras, Wildebeests, Elands which are July–August migrants into the park and African Lions, Cape Buffaloes, Leopards, Nile Crocodiles, Cheetahs, Hippopotamus and some more who are residents. The park is a rhino sanctuary and numbers of the Black Rhino are steadily increasing. Overnight at Nairobi Safari Club.
Day 2: Transfer to Chogoria on your Mount Kenya Climbing Tour.
Have breakfast the transfer Chogoria, we dive trough traditional agricultural country, dirt road and Chogoria forest up to gate. Overnight at Mount Kenya Lodge.
Day 3: Mount Kenya Hiking From Chogoria – Mintos Camp (4300 m).
Have an early morning breakfast then trek through the forest yet home of Impala, African Buffalo, and African Elephant. The trails are safe from game. The hike continues past heather, Nithi River to moorland vegetation. Hiking time is app. 7 – 8 hours. Overnight at Mintos Camp.
Day 4: Ascend to Lenana (4985) Then Descend to Shipton’s Camp (4200 m).
This summit hike starts at 0300, usually lasting 3-4 hours before reaching point Lenana which is at 4985 m. From the summit, descend to Shipton’s camp. Overnight at Shipton’s Hut.
Day 5: Descending to – Sirimon Park Gate (2600 m) on your Kenya Mountaineering Safari.
After breakfast, head for the 5 – 6 hours trail to Sirimon Gate. Overnight at Mountain Rock Lodge.
Day 6: Transfer to Nairobi – Mount Kenya Hiking Tour.
Depending on time, we may choose from the options of the first day- Visit Nairobi National Park or Kenya Museum. Most likely one not done on the day of arrival. Overnight at Nairobi Safari Club.
Day 7: End of Mt.
Kenya Mountaineering Tour - Departure.
