At 5,199 m, Mount Kenya has the second highest peak in Africa. It is an ancient extinct volcano, during whose period of activity (3.1–2.6 million years ago) is thought to have risen to 6,500 m. There are 12 remnant glaciers on the mountain, all receding rapidly, and four secondary peaks that sit at the head of the U-shaped glacial valleys. With its rugged glacier-clad summits and forested middle slopes, Mount Kenya is one of the most impressive landscapes in East Africa. The evolution and ecology of its Afro-alpine flora also provide an outstanding example of ecological processes.

Mount Kenya can be hiked all year round but January – February and August – October are more recommended months. These periods have the best weather of less and no rains.

This hiking tour takes you up to point Lenana (4985 m), the third highest peak. It is here that hikers have excellent view of the surrounding countryside. Lenena is the most popular point of reach for most Mount Kenya’s mountaineer’s because there are no serious altitude issues.

Hiking to Bation and Nelion, which are the highest peaks is organized on request. These points are only recommended for professional mountaineers.
