This is a gorgeous road bike over gentle hills through unspoiled green and gold landscapes. Visit and stay on several Castles, Palaces, Monasteries and Convents; these magnificent places were once inhabited by the clergy or the Queens and Kings of Portugal and now are converted into exquisite historical lodging.

Program and Lodging:

Day 1: Arrival – Welcome Lisbon airport.

Transfer from the airport to Estremoz (2h). Lodging in a castle converted into a Historical Hotel from where you can admire a superb view over the city of Estremoz and the vast Alentejo plain. Lodging in a historical Hotel: Pousada Rainha Santa Isabel.

Day 2: Bike around Estremoz (44 km, +350 m, road) or (71 km +700 m).

Start this tour cycling by pastoral fields, where the only sounds are the jangling bells of flocking sheep chirping. Continue rolling through the natural landscape and pass some villages with the typical Alentejo white-washed homes outlined in blue and ochre trim. Visit a Winery with possible wine tasting. Lodging on the same hotel as day before.

Day 3: Bike from Estremoz to Vila Viçosa – (26 km, +300 m).

Today you will have a leisure day to enjoy. Leave Historical Estremoz and ride to another historical place – Vila Viçosa, the capital of marble in Portugal. Here you can visit the Ducal Palace. Built in the 16th and 17th centuries on the remains of Moorish, possibly even Roman buildings, for centuries it hosted a brilliant court and was a hub of intellectual life. In 1640 Joao IV was the first of the Dukes of Bragança to ascend the Portuguese throne. Although Lisbon then became the seat of the monarchy Joao IV and his successors continued making frequent visits to Vila Viçosa. Lodging in a historical Hotel: Pousada D.João V

Day 4: Bike from Vila Viçosa to Redondo – (40 km, +500 m).

Leave Vila Viçosa riding on an old road and passing through a cork forest. At Alandroal village, contemplate the town’s medieval castle while enjoying a delicious coffee and pastry in the main square. Continue riding through quiet and tranquil roads, crossing small villages and going to a hillier region – “Serra da Ossa”. Pass by the village of Redondo where you can visit a pottery workshop or the wine museum “Enoteca”, and try some of the best Alentejo Wine. Go up the hills surrounding the village and arrive at a beautiful Convent on the Hills – São Paulo – where you will stay on this night. Secluded in the quietness and isolation of the western slopes of the Serra d’Ossa mountain, the Monastery of São Paulo was built in 1182 by hermit monks seeking the ideal place to live and pray in peace and quiet. Lodging in a historical Hotel: Convento São Paulo.

Day 5: Bike from Redondo to Évora (48 km, +450 m).

A beautiful day riding rolling hills of gold and green, dotted with cork trees, olive groves, and flocks of sheep. Pass by typical Alentejo villages of white-washed homes outlined in blue and yellow trim. Ride nice roads viewing cork trees and pristine vineyards, through pastoral countryside dotted by abandoned castles, to the village of São Miguel de Machede. End of day in Évora which is classified in UNESCO’s International Heritage list. Here you can find evidence of 2000 years of History and there are many interesting points to visit in Évora. Évora is considered as one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal since the ancient times. Lodging in a charming Hotel: Hotel Mar d’Ar Aqueduto 5*.

Day 6: Bike to Arraiolos – (46 km, +350 m) or (68 km, +600 m).

After breakfast ride to Arraiolos, noted for its colorful, hand-stitched woolen tapestries. In the afternoon possible to stop during ride and visit a winery. Return to Évora passing by small typical villages. Close to the end of this day it’s possible to have a wine tasting in a typical winery! Lodging in a charming Hotel: Hotel Mar d’Ar Aqueduto 5*.
