Lake Constance is situated between Germany, Austria and Switzerland. There is a wonderful cycle path going around the lake but for the road cycle tour we selected tours into the back country as well. Many time the trail will be flat but there are demanding ascent to pass if you choose to cycle into the Swiss mountains.
Lovely small cities are situated next to the lake and many attractions are along the route like the famous Rhine waterfalls in Schaffhausen. Depending on the season you will pass vineyards and fruit orchards in full bloom or see the Alps with it snow. A highlight are also the islands in the lake like Mainau with a castle and flower gardens.
Characteristic: You will cycle within a countryside with small hills, river valleys and historic cities. Depending on the selected option you will follow smaller side roads, cycle path and sometimes main road with traffic in peak season or on the weekend. All options you will find in the tour book. For this tour you should have a good fitness and for the longer options with the ascent, a very good fitness will be very helpful. There are sometimes steep descends and therefore we expect some experience cycling on smaller zigzag roads in the mountains. Hm = difference of altitude.
Day 1: Arrival to Salem. Salem is a small village and the regular hotel is based next to a castle. The railway station is about 1,5 km away from the hotel but there are busses and taxis running.
Day 2: Salem – Bregenz. You will start gently following a river valley till you reach the first fruit orchards. Afterwards you will cycle downwards to the shore of lake Constance for dinner. Afterwards you cycle inland again passing some small lovely lakes before you start your ascent up to Scheidegg. You will have a wonderful view over lake Constance and a fast descent to Bregenz which is in Austria. Enjoy the wonderful esplanade whit a small harbour, restaurants and the festival area.
- Option A: 82 km, +730 Hm, - 780 Hm
- Option B: 97 km, +1.490 Hm, - 1.540 Hm.
Day 3: Bregenz – Güttingen, 60 km. You follow the lakeside cycle path leaving Bregenz and afterwards you cycle along the Bregenz river and the old Rhine river valley. You don’t even see it that you cross the border to Switzerland. In the background you will see the mountains coming (or do you choose the cycle trail along the lake?) and the winding mountain road leading you over the well know pass of Ruppen to the famous Appenzell. Along a high road you will cycle to Heiden where it goes downwards to lake Bodensee again. What a view! Afterwards you follow the road or cycle path along the lake to Güttingen.
- Option A: 65 km, +1.050 Hm, -1.020 Hm (or 60 km, +145 Hm, -120 Hm)
- Option B: 114 km, +1.810 Hm, -1.780 Hm.
Day 4: Güttingen - Singen, 89 km. A little bit off the lake shore you will follow side roads and a cycle path to Kreuzlingen which is next to the city of Constance. One city goes over to the next and if there are no border houses you wouldn’t even see it that you change from Switzerland to Germany. Afterwards you follow the road along the Rhine river passing many little cities to your way to Schaffhausen where you find the famous Rhine waterfalls. Optional we have a tour running a little bit up and down in the back country where you find many hamlets and farming land. In the city of Stein am Rhein both trails are meeting again.
- Option A: 90 km, +790 Hm, - 780 Hm
- Option B: 94 km, +1.050 Hm, - 1.035 Hm
Day 5: Singen – Constance - Salem, 99 km. You will follow the fine cycle path along the „Gnadensees“ to the island of Reichenau, where you can visit the monastery and the gardens of the island. Afterwards you cycle into the main city on lake Constance to the city of Constance. Take some time to visit the old city. Afterwards you keep following the cycle trail to the second island “Mainau” with the castle and wonderful gardens. Afterwards you cycle to the other side of the lake to Ludwigshafen and over a little mountain range. The last part of the trail leads you again through hamlets, vineyards, fruit orchards and fields back to Salem.
