The Fiji Islands are very much defined by the vastness of the South Pacific Ocean which for a long time have provided both isolation and protection. Made up of 332 volcanic islands, 110 of which are permanently inhabited Fiji is most famous as a tropical resort holiday destination. But beyond the friendly faces in the upmarket resorts is a land of big hearted, laid back and genuinely welcoming people. With deep traditional values both the Fijian and Indo-Fijian cultures are alive and kicking. Picture subsistence villages, rain-forested mountains and quiet roads winding around a coastline of an unbelievably clear blue ocean edged with swaying coconut palms. This is the Fiji we are heading for.

We'll take you to three of Fiji's main islands, starting in Viti Levu with a two day village based trek in the Koriyanitu National Heritage Park (revisiting friends - Mandy worked with over a decade ago). A short flight takes us to Vanua Levu for six days of cycling across the island and on to Taveuni, aptly named the Garden Island. Add into the mix overnight village stays, reef snorkeling and plunging into crystal clear waterfall pools and you have the perfect mix for for a real tropical adventure.

Day 1: Arrive in Nadi, free day. Meet your group and our first meal together.

Day 2: After short vehicle transfer we join our local guide and begin ‘a stiff’ trek up through grasslands and mountain rainforest to Mt Batilamu (11:10m). We camp the night in a mountain hut with stunning views. 3-4hr trek. Mountain Hut.

Day 3: After exploring view points from the top of Mt Batilamu we trek over the sleeping giant and down to a very quiet and hidden Village. 3-5 hrs trek. Village stay.

Day 4: We transfer to Nadi Airport and fly to Labasa - the copra and sugar cane capital of Vanua Levu. Hotel.

Day 5: A day ride around Labasa to get used to our bikes and take our first swim in the tropical ocean. 30 km. Hotel.

Day 6: A great day to stretch the legs and get the sweat glands working over a 450 m pass. 60 km. Hotel.

Day 7: A free afternoon to explore the town of Savusavu, or go for a swim or snorkel. Hotel.

Day 8: Ride the ‘Hibiscus Highway’ following the coast, through sleepy villages... We stay with our friends for the night. 60 km. Village stay.

Day 9: A short morning ride to meet our dive boat which takes us to Taveuni Island stopping to snorkel the famous Rainbow Reef on the way. 20 km. Village guesthouse.

Day 10: We cycle the rolling Taveuni coastal route through subsistence villages and massive coconut plantations. 45 km. Hotel.

Day 11: Bike the extent of Taveuni’s coastal road and spend the afternoon walking in a National Heritage Park. Afternoon transfer to hotel. 30 km. 4 hr walk. Hotel.

Day 12: Final breakfast together. Or stay on and relax!
