Marvelous Spatuletail, Long-whiskered Owlet, Yellow-scarfed Tanager, 4 Endemic Antpittas, Lulu’s Tody-Tyrant – and that’s just a few of the mind-blowing, highly sought-after species we’ll be looking for at only one of the premier Peru birding sites we visit on our comprehensive Northern Peru Endemic Birding Tour! Starting on the dry coastal scrub at Chavarri, we will bird the best, most up-to-date sites for the vast myriad of endemic and special species of the Tumbesian region, before we continue into the heart of the Maranon Valley. Some of the headline species we will enjoy in this region include Rufous Flycatcher, Peruvian Plantcutter, Sulphur-throated and Cinereous Finches, Elegant Crescentchest, White-winged Guan, Henna-hooded Foliage-gleaner, Piura Chat-Tyrant, Chapman’s Antshrike, and many more. Mammal opportunities in this region include a high probability of encountering the lovely Spectacled Bear!

Once in the Maranon drainage proper, we will seek out the whole suite of Maranon Endemics including all the inca-finches, Maranon Crescentchest, Chinchipe Spinetail, Koepcke’s Screech Owl, Great Spinetail, the whole lot. This interesting habitat is being depleted rapidly by small subsistence agriculture, and we will make sure to focus on finding the rare birds that cannot be found anywhere else, and may sadly not be around for long. From the depths of this famous valley we will then continue to the highlands of Abra Patricia. Just a few of the amazing species to be found on this Peru birding tour are listed above. Pale-billed Antpitta, Russet-mantled Softtail, White-capped Tanager, Cinnamon Screech-Owl, Emerald-bellied Puffleg, Royal Sunangel, and Bar-winged Wood Wren are but a few of the birds we will enjoy during the day, while at night we will make efforts to locate not only the owlet, but both White-throated and Cinnamon Screech Owls, Rufous-banded Owl, and the stunning Swallow-tailed Nightjar!

We descend the Eastern Andes, traversing endemic-rich strata of habitats as we go. That this Peru bird tour offers the opportunity for some 700+ species is a testament to how incredibly diverse and rich the east slope of the Andes actually is. But one of the clear highlights of our Northern Peru bird tour may well be in the foothill forest near Tarapoto where we make an attempt (with high probability of success) to see the recently described Scarlet-banded Barbet!

We finally end the tour passing back across the Maranon drainage to Cajamarca, where the critically endangered and localized Grey-bellied Comet may be, perhaps, the last bird of this unforgettable trip. This action-packed adventure offers the most exciting and rewarding specialized birding in the nation, if not the entire Andes!

The same applies to approximate flight and single supplement rates, which are also quoted in the respective fixed currency.

c) Furthermore, these costs are subject to unforeseen increases in tour related costs and may have to be adjusted as a result.
d) Lastly, we may be forced to change or alter the itinerary and / or the designated leader/s at short or no notice due to unforeseen circumstances; please be aware that we will attempt to adhere as close to the original program as possible.

Special Notes:
- It is important for the comfort of your fellow travellers that you do not over-pack. Kindly stick to 20kg (44lb) for check-in luggage and 8kg (+-18kg) for hand luggage.
- Fitness: We will be birding the mountainous areas of Northern Peru on foot along forest trails that are steep and, depending on weather conditions, sometimes slippery. A generally good level of fitness is required for this section of the tour.
- Crime is not commonplace for tourists in Peru; however, it is prudent to exercise caution as you would for any travel destination. Do not unnecessarily flaunt cash and valuables and do not leave valuables exposed in the vehicle.
- We will be birding in some remote areas well away from modern medical facilities.
- The hotels are generally of a comfortable yet sometimes basic standard throughout. At the Scarlet-banded Barbet site we will be staying the night in a local community house, which is rather basic.
- The Scarlet-banded Barbet site is very difficult to access and requires using 4x4 vehicles on muddy roads for 50km to reach the area. This takes around 6 hours depending on the road condition, which is usually poor. Anyone who wishes to not visit this site can be dropped off at a lodge en route for the two nights we spend here.
- Wellington/Rubber Boots are essential on this tour, as is good rain gear.
