Pieniny offer opportunities for horse riding with wonderful outlook of the Tatra Mountains. You discover this region by crossing vast natural meadows and beech and pine forests. The vast grassy plateaus are the result of human activity that has cleared the great forests to breed sheep. They are perfect for gallops and for unforgettable memories! Pieniny are also beautiful villages with wooden buildings where the mountain population supports a rich folk culture originating from ancient pastoral and agricultural traditions.

The Pieniny National Park is located 120 km to the south from Krakow. It includes partially Tatras - mountain range on the Polish-Slovakian border. Apart from beech and pine forests there are 167 species of plants and mountain flowers that are best exposed in June. Large mammals are few, but it still has 250 species of animals and 150 species of birds. The high meadows are famous for their profusion of butterflies of which the most known species is the Apollo, we cannot see elsewhere. In the summer, large plateaus of the region witnesses how wildlife mingles with sheep herds. This is also when the production of the famous, traditional Polish mountain cheese ‘oscypek’ blooms.

Itinerary:
Day 1.

Arrival to Cracow. You will be picked up from the airport and transferred to Jaworki - a small village in the heart of the mountains Pieniny (about 2hrs drive from Krakow, 120 km). Jaworki is known for its church dating from the eighteenth century that has the traces of the culture of Lemks - old inhabitants of this region. On the way, you will stop to visit Szczawnia (6 km from Jaworki) – a small town, picturesquely located along the Grajcarek River, between the Radziejowa peak and the Małe Pieniny mountain range. Szczawnica is a health resort, specialized in treatment of allergic and respiratory conditions. You will visit the Mineral Water Bar, beautifully located on Dietl Square, where you can taste six types of mineral water. You can take a nice walk admiring original architectural style of the spa buildings and of the villas (some of them dating to the start of the 19th century, some of them renovated). You will also have the opportunity to see Dworek Gościnny (Guest Manor) - today a magnificently designed art and cultural centre. There are also two beautiful parks in Szczawnica: The Dolny (Lower) Park - designed as a botanical garden with different plant species and the Gorny (Upper) Park – with different sculptures. After a nice walk in the parks, you can take a break and drink a coffee on a nice terrace of the Café Helenka, with the view on the on Dietl Square. Then, it’s time for us to reach Jaworki where we will meet the guide and his horses. In the evening, a welcome dinner will be served.

Day 2.

After the breakfast, we saddle our horses and get ready for our first ride (3 hours in the saddle). We will climb on the hills of Male Pieniny – a lots of open spaces with a panoramic view on Tatras and surrounding hills. We will ride along the borderline shared with Slovakia, following beautiful montane meadows on which local highlanders still pasture sheep. We will also have the opportunity to see Trzy Korony (Three Crowns mountain, 982 m above sea level) and Sokolica mountain (747 m above sea level). Then, we come back for lunch. In the afternoon, you will take part in the raft down Dunajec River. A minibus will take you to Sromowce Wyzne (23 km, 30 minutes) where the adventure will start: rafting down the gorges of the Dunajec on traditional wooden rafts piloted by Flisacy (raft sailors) dressed in traditional costumes. The gorges of the Pieniny are some of the most beautiful river gorges that can be found in Europe. The water channel impresses, twisting among mountain slopes. You will have a chance to admire majestic elevations several hundred meters high dominating both sides of the river. The raft takes around 2-3 hours (15 km) and ends in Szczawnica. Then, a minibus will take you back to Jaworki. At your arrival, a dinner will be served.

Day 3.

After the breakfast, we will head in the direction of the Przechyba Mountain, following beautiful forests of the Radziejowa mountain range. In Pieniny Mountains, the most common wood is the Carpathian Beech Forest with the European beech and silver fir. We will spend in the saddle around 3 hours. If the weather allows us, we will stop for a picnic. In case of rain, a lunch will be served in our guest house. In the afternoon, you will have free time. We strongly recommend you to visit the Homole gorge. It is a deep canyon with steep walls reaching up to 120 m in height. The canyon is very picturesque and very popular. The path crosses the stream many times with the metal bridges, and endless stairways… Once you are on the top, you reach open spaces with a panoramic view. There is a small restaurant where you can have a coffee on a nice terrace with a beautiful view on the region and … on the sheep on the pasture. Then, it’s possible either to come back to the village on foot or by a chairlift. In the evening, a dinner will be served.

Day 4.

After the breakfast, we will saddle the horses and move in the direction of Wysoka Mountain (1050m) - the highest peak of Pieniny. The summit is made of red limestone and it is not accessible on horse but we will admire beautiful panoramic view on the region and on the rocks of Homole Ravin. We will spend three hours in the saddle. Depending on the weather conditions, we will either have lunch in form of picnic, either it will be served in our guest house. In the afternoon, you will have free time. You can bike or if you wish, we can also organise on your demand a visit of Niedzica castle (situated 27 km from Jaworki, about 40 minutes in minibus). The castle was built in the years 1320 and 1326 and is very well preserved. It is now an interesting museum, located on a hill, with the view on the dam on Lake Czorsztyn and on the ruins of Czorsztyn Castle located on the other side of the lake. Niedzica Castle is considered to be one of the most picturesque castles in Poland. The legends says that there is a map of the Inca treasure somewhere hidden with information of this gold treasure and some secrets of the Inca gold. Why don’t you try to find it? In the evening, a dinner will be served.

Day 5.

After the breakfast, we will ride in the direction of the Piwniczna village. We will follow the Grajcarek River and then, we will wander through fields and meadows enjoying interesting panoramas on Pieniny and Tatras. We will also see White Water and Black Water Valleys. Then, we will reach Pokrywisko mountain which used to be a village in the past but was abandoned due to the “Operation Vistula” (a codename for the 1947 forced resettlement of Ukrainian minority including Boykos and Lemkos from the south).
We will stop for lunch in the small restaurant located on the top of Obidza Mountain where we will admire beautiful view on the surroundings. We will spend in the saddle around three hours. Once we are back, you will have free time to rest… or to visit Musical Sheep Yard (Muzyczna Owczarnia) in Jaworki – a very special concert hall with a unique atmosphere and an original interior… It hosts each year Polish and international artists and several concerts take place there. In the evening, a dinner will be served in our guesthouse.

Day 6.
A wonderful day is ahead us (5-6 hours in the saddle). We will cross the border with Slovakia and ride through the woods and open spaces with perfect landscapes over neighboring Tatra Mountains. There will be many opportunities for long gallops on beautiful meadows. For lunch, we will cook some sausages in the open fire…
In the evening, it’s time for a goodbye dinner.

Day 7.
After the breakfast, departure to the airport or to Cracow. If there is enough time, it’s possible to stop in the center for a quick visit. It is also possible to extend the stay in Krakow.

Riding skills level:

This trip is not for debutants because we ride outside (no arena). We recommend to be confident and in control at all paces (including posting trots, two point canters and gallops). However, in case your horse riding level is intermediary, we can also be flexible and avoid gallops. Children are welcome with their guardians.

Board and Accommodation and Assistance:

You will be accommodated in the family run guest house owned by the guide Andrzej and his wife Teresa who cooks delicious food. The accommodation style is basic (rooms with bathrooms) but very clean and with the warm and friendly atmosphere. It’s also a perfect place to stay to visit Pieniny and surroundings. The guest house is situated in a magnificent area of Homole Ravine and of White Water Valley which are considered to be the biggest attractions of the Pieniny Region. The guide knows only few words in English but due to the fact that he is very communicative, it is not a problem and riders are able to understand him (and the opposite) during the horse trips. English speaking Belle Pologne representative is possible for bigger groups (to be confirmed). Your enthusiasm, good spirits and an open minded approach and ability to adapt to the customs will enhance your enjoyment!
