Learn Spanish in a friendly and personalized environment at our school in San Miguel de Allende, colonial gem of Mexico. The goal of the Spanish classes at us is to enable students to communicate effectively. Emphasis is placed on verbal interaction in the classroom, and class placement is based more on verbal fluency than on academic knowledge.
The Academic Calendar runs year round and is divided into twelve four week long terms. The curriculum is designed for the four week terms, but we will accept students anytime throughout the term are space is available. Each one-month term includes intensive Spanish classes, seminars, working groups, Mexican cooking classes and guided tours of San Miguel. Minimum enrollment is one week with these exceptions:
- On June session (6th) min. enrollment is 4 weeks;
- On July session (7th) min. enrollment is 4 weeks;
- On August session (8th) min. enrollment is 2 weeks.
Spanish classes are designed as four week sessions and divided into three levels - Nivel Principiante (Beginner), Nivel Intermedio (Intermediate), and Nivel Avanzado (Advanced). Student placement is re-evaluated weekly.
The daily schedule is designed to get students talking and practicing what they have learned throughout the day. Mornings are divided into three sessions with breaks to socialize. Afternoons are devoted to seminars where the goal is to practice talking about a wide variety of topics.
- 20 hrs. per week of intensive Spanish in classroom of maximum 10 students;
- 10 hrs. per week of seminars, working groups, and guided walking tours of San Miguel. Tuition: $120 (1 week) - $450 (4 weeks). Additional consecutive weeks - $100 per week.
Students can indicate their preferred schedule and we will do our best to respect it, but, in general, they agree to have lessons either with a morning or afternoon schedule, accepting the decision of the school in this regard. Private lesson schedule is subject to teacher and/or classroom availability.
Students enrolled for a minimum of 10 hours a week of private lessons can, if possible according to their schedule, participate in the afternoon activities of the group programs, paying an extra fee of $5 US, per person, per each afternoon class they would like to join. Price: One student - $12 US per hour, two or more students with same teacher - $8 US per hour, per student.
All activities are in Spanish with an emphasis on improving speaking and listening skills. With the interaction of language, culture and society, learning is not confined to the classroom. Living with a Mexican family substantially enriches the language and cultural experience. The homestay program is surely your best choice if you would like to enjoy a total immersion in the Spanish language and Mexican culture.
We can guarantee that all accommodations are with middle to upper class Mexican families, personally known to us. All homes are clean and comfortable. We try to place each student with a family that matches his or her interests and age. Families serve as excellent hosts in the town and provide a comfortable and safe environment in which to assimilate to another country. Many students make lifelong friends with their host families in San Miguel.
Also, if you choose to make your own housing arrangements, there are a wide variety of hotels in San Miguel de Allende, suitable to any budget. There are also apartments and houses for rent for a wide range of prices.
Our team of highly qualified professors, with an average of twenty years experience in teaching Spanish as a second language, has designed a practical, dynamic, and communicative method to learn Spanish in a spontaneous and natural way. They are very talented and do their best to make lessons not only interesting but fun and relaxing.
Angélica Rodríguez, director of us. Graduate in Spanish of the "Instituto Tecnolgico of San Luis Potosi'." She has been teaching Spanish as a second language for fourteen years. Angélica is the founder and the director of our institute as well as teacher of Spanish and Mexican cooking. After teaching Spanish as an employed teacher for 14 years, Angélica, in November of 1996, realized her dream: to open her own Spanish language school.
Martha Rodríguez Barbosa - graduate in Science of Communication of the "Instituto Hispano Ingles of San Luis Potosi'." She has been teaching Spanish as second language for sixteen years. Martha is our teacher of Spanish and Mexican dance. She is expert in teaching children and teenagers and also in teaching courses for specific needs (business, medical, teachers, etc.).
Prof. Socorro Olalde Chavéz - graduate in Spanish of the "Instituto La Paz de Queretaro." She has been teaching Spanish as a second language for twenty-two years. Socorro teaches Spanish and lectures on Mexican culture and song.
Prof. Jorge Arteaga Soto - graduate in Spanish of the "Escuela Normal Superior de Queretaro." He has been teaching Spanish as a second language for twenty three years. Jorge is our Lecturer for Mexican history, culture, and tradition and an expert in the history and traditions of San Miguel. Jorge organizes the walking tours on Monday afternoons.
Things to see and do
- Ranches breeding brave bulls, vineyards, haciendas the Tuesday market, colonial architecture, churches, thermal baths, archaeological sites, spectacular scenery, excellent golf and tennis, superb equestrian facilities, hiking and mountain biking;
- The village and Shrine of Atotonilco, a twenty minute drive from San Miguel de Allende, has some of the finest native frescoes in Mexico;
- Dolores Hidalgo, 45 minutes away, is a center for ceramic dishes and tiles, hand painted and fired into top quality items
- The city of Guanajuato, an hour away, has unique underground streets, mansions of aristocrats who were the world's main silver suppliers in the 18th century, and a museum of mummies preserved by the soil and dry climate;
- The city of Queretaro, 50 minutes away, is famous for opals, convent museums, and marblework;
- The city of Leon, about 1 and 1/2 hour away is one of the leather capitals of the world: handbags, boots, and shoes, and an entire shopping mall devoted to leather goods.
Upon request and for a minimum of 6 students the school organizes week-end one day tours to Guanjuato or Pozos or Dolores Hidalgo.
Prices start at $45 US per person.
San Miguel de Allende is situated about 160 miles north of Mexico City and remains in 2001 a relatively untouched antique city of the old world. There is a blessed absence of traffic lights, parking meters, billboards, and neon signs. The city seems free from the pressures of modern living. San Miguel de Allende has been declared a national monument: no building is allowed that doesn't conform to Colonial style.
This is a small, family managed, school, located in a portion of the family house. We have 5 classrooms, a kitchen for the Mexican cooking class and a patio with cantera fountain where the students meet for the coffee break.
The minimum cost is for 1 week enrollment while the maximum is for one 4-week session. Any additional week over the 4th costs $100.
Prices for housing with a Mexican family, including 3 meals daily - $18 US per day, per person in double occupancy or $22 US per day in private room. You are expected to pay your balance for your homestay to the family upon your arrival. Families accept travelers' cheques, US dollars, and pesos.
